Maishofen: Between the Steinernes Meer and the Grasberge range and Lake Zell
The Steinernes Meer with its it harsh outcrops on the one side, the gentle Pinzgau Grasberge on the other, and the crystal-blue waters of Lake Zell in the middle: the location of the village of Maishofen with your chalet reads like an instruction manual for picture-perfect Alpine hamlets! Maishofen as a winter destination
In winter, Maishofen is the ideal starting point for reaching the ski resorts in the vicinity. A free ski bus will take visitors to the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, to the Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See and the glacier ski resort of Kaprun.
The 30 km network of cross-country trails that is free to use also deserves a mention. A tip: keep your Thursday evenings free, as this is when the tobogganing run near Kammer castle is open for a night time tobogganing session by torch light. A one-of-a-kind experience!
Around Lake Zell
On a warm summer’s day, the waters of the lake are impossible to resist (and why should you?) When Lake Zell glitters and sparkles in the sunlight, a quick dip is mandatory. Guests staying in the village have free entry to the Strandbad Maishofen. Other lakeside beaches are located in Zell am See, Thumersbach and Schüttdorf. Lake Zell is not just for swimming – sailing or windsurfing are also great ways to enjoy this wonderful gem. Motorised boats are not permitted on Lake Zell, which helps to maintain the drinking water quality of the lake, one of the purest in Austria. For the patient among you, a fishing trip might be just the ticket. Enjoy some contemplative me-time while fishing in the clear waters of the lake. With a little luck, you might catch some whitefish, lake trout or pike perch!
A bicycle tour around the lake is also much recommended. Many small beaches and inns along the way offer refreshments and the opportunity to cool down. Lake Zell is also a wonderful destination during winter – try ice-skating or curling, then relax and warm up in your chalet in Maishofen!
Maishofen, a cycling village
You are passionate about cycling? Then your Maishofen apartment makes the perfect base for your holiday. This is a family-friendly cycling village, with little traffic and lots of cycling paths that lead from the centre of the village all the way to Lake Zell. If you fancy a longer tour, set forth on the Tauernradweg trail that covers 280 versatile kilometres. Ambitious cyclists might want to try the high Alpine road up the Großglockner. Be aware that this route is only suitable for experienced and trained cyclists! If you want to go easy on yourself, switch to an e-bike.
For golf fans, the “Cycle & Hiking Golf” network is the perfect choice: 15 golfing destinations on 12 km may be explored on foot or on a bicycle. The trail affords wonderful views and takes you past some of the most stunning spots around Maishofen.
Hikes around Maishofen
Hikers, walkers and ramblers will all get their money’s worth in Maishofen. Leisurely strolls around Lake Zell and in the lowlands, easy hikes up to the mountain pastures and sophisticated climbing tours up the 3,000-metre summits – Maishofen has something for everyone.
Guided hiking tours are available from June to September. The musical hikes up the Kammereggalm that take place in July and August are a wonderful way to link nature and tradition. After a relaxed hiking tour, you can listen to folk music in a mountain inn while sampling local delicacies.
A particularly beautiful tour leads up the Schwalbenwand, a local mountain with an altitude of 2,000m. The route starts right in Maishofen and takes you through forests and across Alpine meadows all the way to the summit. For refreshments, stop off at one of the mountain inns that are dotted along the route.
Anton Faistauer is one of Salzburg’s best-known painters. He spent his childhood in Maishofen and is also buried here. The Kulturwanderweg Anton Faistauer is a walking trail that was opened in his honour and takes walkers from the centre of the village to Kammer castle and back in ten stations, along the Saalachuferweg trail and the Sausteige trails.
